Frequently Used Terms
ACTIVE: An undergraduate member who has been initiated in a chapter.
ALUMNA: A sorority member who is no longer a member of a collegiate chapter.
BID: An invitation to join a sorority or fraternity.
CHAPTER: A membership unit of a national or international sorority or fraternity.
CONTINUOUS OPEN BIDDING (COB): Also called informal recruitment; a time, other than formal recruitment when bids may be extended and accepted.
DIRTY RECRUITMENT: The term used to describe illegal rushing practices occurring outside the limitations of the Panhellenic formal Recruitment process.
FORMAL RECRUITMENT: A period set aside for structural recruiting which the Panhellenic Council organizes.
FRATERNITY: The name applied to any Greek-letter organization, including most sororities; informally, it is applied strictly to men’s group.
HAZING: Any conduct which subjects another person, whether physically, mentally, emotionally, or psychologically, to anything that may endanger, abuse, degrade, or intimidate the person as a condition of association with a group or organization, regardless of the person's consent or lack of consent. Tulane University has a NO HAZING policy and takes strict action against any fraternity or sorority that participates in hazing activities.
HOUSE:
- The residence of a Greek organization.
- An informal reference to an individual's Greek organization.
INITIATION: Ceremony during which new members receive lifelong membership privileges to their fraternity or sorority.
INTAKE: Term for the process by which NPHC members are selected to become new members of an organization. Much more secretive than recruitment or rush, but generally includes an application and an interview process, followed by an educational program done at the regional level conducted by alumni, then an initiation (generally known as “crossing”).
INTERFRATERNITY COUNCIL: (IFC) The representative body governing NIC member organizations on a campus.
LINE: A group of new members in a specific NPHC chapter in a specific semester
LEGACY: A son/daughter, brother/sister, grandson/granddaughter or nephew/niece of a fraternity/sorority member.
NATIONAL PANHELLENIC CONFERENCE: (NPC) The coordinating body of all college Panhellenics in the United States and Canada.
NATIONAL PANHELLENIC COUNCIL : (NPHC) The governing body of nine historically black Greek-lettered fraternities and sororities.
NEOPHYTE: New member of an NPHC organization. Also called a Neo.
ORDER of OMEGA: National honor society that recognizes and promotes Greek leadership and scholastics
PANHELLENIC COUNCIL: The representative body governing all panhellenic member sororities.
PHILANTHROPY: A charitable project sponsored by a Greek organization.
POTENTIAL NEW MEMBER (PNM): Any woman interested in becoming a sorority or fraternity member who is matriculated and eligible to join.
PROBATE SHOW: Event where newly initiated members of an NPHC group perform step routines and reveal themselves to the public after their intake period
QUOTA: The maximum number of women each sorority may pledge during formal Recruitment.
RECOMMENDATION: A letter or form written by an alumna member recommending a potential member to a sorority.
RECRUITMENT GUIDANCE COUNSELOR (GAMMA CHI): A representative of the Panhellenic Council who has disaffiliated from her sorority in order to guide potential new members through the Recruitment process.
STEP SHOW: A show performed by NPHC organizations (as well as other organizations). Also called Stepping.
